Located in Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island, Cape Breton Regional Municipality with 95,000 people is the second largest municipality in Nova Scotia after Halifax. This population increase became possible due to changes from the government of Nova Scotia in 1995. To reduce the number of incorporated cities and towns, there has been a process of amalgamation, leading to the creation of Cape Breton Regional Municipality or CBRM, which included the City of Sydney, the Towns of Sydney Mines, North Sydney, Glace Bay, Dominion, New Waterford and Louisbourg, and the Municipality of the County of Cape Breton.
The first description of the terrain, similar to modern Cape Breton, was made in 1497 by the Venetian explorer John Cabot. However, the first settlements began to appear here only in the 18th century when the French claimed the region and named it Acadia. In 1719, the first settlement called Louisbourg was built, which performed the function of the fortified town. In 1760, during the Seven Years War, it was destroyed by the British Army. After the end of the war, this region was renamed to Cape Breton Island and formally annexed by Nova Scotia. The island was a separate colony from 1765 to 1820, when it was again re-emerged into Nova Scotia.
In recent years, the region is experiencing an economic recession. Several fish plants were closed during the 1990s. Coal and metal industry fell into decay as well. Nevertheless, CBRM is still a popular destination for tourists. Nearby attractions like the Fortress of Louisbourg in Cape Breton create new jobs which nourishes the region.
CBRM has a humid continental climate, although it differs from other continental parts of Canada. In summer, it’s much warmer, while you can expect a lot more precipitations during the whole year. In winter the temperatures rarely drop below -10 C degrees.
The municipality is the eastern terminus of Highway 105, the Trans-Canada Highway, which continues to Newfoundland by Marine Atlantic ferry services.
